A Tribute To The Cars

2016 is the 30th anniversary of the founding of the Cars.

The group, which originated in Boston, MA, with Ric Ocasek, Benjamin Orr, Elliot Easton, Greg Hawkes, and David Robinson, was quick to skyrocket to the top of the charts and secured a place in the hearts of an entire generation.

Probably their most-famed contribution to the world of rock and roll was the idea of mixing in the electric synthesizer with “traditional” rock themes and harmonies. This gave an innovative, eclectic sound to many of their songs, and the practice then took off and became extremely popular and common during the 1980s. This mix of rockabilly, a tribute harking back to the 50s and the early days of Rock and Roll, with new innovations is what made the band so popular.

They were awarded best artist awards by Rolling Stone magazine as early as 1978, only two years into the formation of the group, and several of their songs quickly hit the Billboard charts as well, leading up to their fame with the MTV Music Awards of 1984.

Best Cars Songs: Drive and Just What I Needed

While the band had a number of popular hits, the two most famous of all of their songs were Drive, from the 1984 album Heartbeat City, and Just What I Needed, from their 1978 album entitled simply “The Cars.”
